Across Australia, members of Plast continue to mark Orthodox Easter with a profound sense of ritual, remembrance, and community, maintaining traditions that connect diasporic life with spiritual heritage. From Sydney to Perth and beyond, young Plastuny take on active roles in церковні відправи (church services), embodying both reverence and continuity.
A central moment of the Easter period is Велика п’ятниця (Great Friday), a day of mourning and reflection. In New South Wales, Plast members gathered at The Intercession of the Holy Virgin Ukrainian Orthodox Church for Страсна Вечірня з виносом Плащаниці — Vespers and the Procession of the Holy Shroud (Epitaphios) — led by Fr Michael Smolynec. This deeply symbolic service commemorates the burial of Christ, as the embroidered Shroud is carried in solemn procession and placed for veneration. Plastuny stood in honour guard, their presence reinforcing the ritual’s gravity while demonstrating the active role of youth in sustaining faith traditions.
A similar spirit was evident in Western Australia. On April 10, 2026, at the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Plast members took part in the honorary vigil by the Holy Shroud. Standing watch beside the Плащаниця, they participated in a practice that is both ceremonial and introspective — a gesture of молитва (prayer), пошана (respect), and внутрішнє зосередження (inner reflection). The Shroud itself serves as a powerful reminder of the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, while the vigil affirms a living connection to that narrative.
What distinguishes these observances within the Australian context is not only their continuity but their intergenerational significance. For young people growing up far from Ukraine, participation in Easter rites becomes a form of cultural and spiritual transmission. Through embodied practices — standing vigil, attending services, singing responses — Plastuny learn to carry tradition forward, ensuring it remains dynamic rather than static.
