Across Australia this Easter, Ukrainian Plast scouts—Plastuny—once again took part in one of the most solemn and meaningful traditions: standing guard (stiyka) at the tomb of Christ in Catholic and Eastern churches. Dressed in uniform, they formed an honour guard from Good Friday through Holy Saturday, marking a period of mourning, reflection, and spiritual vigilance.
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, a day defined by grief, stillness, and reverence. It is on this day that the symbolic tomb is prepared within the church, and Plastuny begin their watch. Standing in pairs, often in silence for extended periods, they embody discipline and devotion. Their presence is not ceremonial alone—it is an act of service, a physical expression of faith, and a gesture of collective remembrance.
The vigil continues through Holy Saturday, a liminal day between death and resurrection. In this in-between space, the guard takes on deeper meaning.
