Plast Senior Leader Longyn Kohut began his Scouting journey in 1926, joining the novatstvo (Cub Scouts) as a young boy. During his early years, he took part in camps at Sokil and hiking expeditions through the Carpathian Mountains, experiences that laid the foundations for a lifelong commitment to Plast.
In 1955, Longyn joined Plast in Australia and quickly became an active member of the organisation. He served as a youth leader (vykhovnyk) from 1955 to 1969 and as a liaison officer (zviazkovyi) from 1963 to 1965. He also served on numerous camp leadership teams and commanded a youth camp in 1963.
Longyn went on to play an important leadership role in Victoria, serving as stanychnyi (Branch Leader) from 1970 to 1972 and again from 1979 to 1981. He was also a member and chair of the Branch Council between 1973 and 1978.
These years were an active period of growth for Plast in Victoria, including the ongoing development of the Sokil campsite, which became an important home for the community and its activities.
Beyond his dedication to Scouting, Longyn was a talented musician who played a wide range of instruments, bringing his musical abilities to the Plast community.
In recognition of his outstanding service and commitment, Longyn Kohut was awarded Plast’s highest distinction, the Order of St George in Gold.

His legacy reflects the enduring spirit of Plast: a lifelong commitment to youth, community and the preservation of Ukrainian heritage across generations.
