Across Australia this Easter, Ukrainian Plast scouts\u2014Plastuny\u2014once again took part in one of the most solemn and meaningful traditions: standing guard (stiyka) at the tomb of Christ in Catholic and Eastern churches. Dressed in uniform, they formed an honour guard from Good Friday through Holy Saturday, marking a period of mourning, reflection, and spiritual vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, a day defined by grief, stillness, and reverence. It is on this day that the symbolic tomb is prepared within the church, and Plastuny begin their watch. Standing in pairs, often in silence for extended periods, they embody discipline and devotion. Their presence is not ceremonial alone\u2014it is an act of service, a physical expression of faith, and a gesture of collective remembrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vigil continues through Holy Saturday, a liminal day between death and resurrection. In this in-between space, the guard takes on deeper meaning. It reflects endurance, patience, and the sustaining of belief even in uncertainty. For young Plast members, many of whom are part of the Ukrainian diaspora in Australia, this tradition also becomes a powerful link to cultural identity and heritage. It reinforces values central to Plast: responsibility, community, and moral strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In cities across Australia\u2014from Sydney, Melbourne and Geelong to Brisbane and Perth\u2014this practice connected generations. Older members who once stood guard themselves watched as younger Plastuny took their place, continuing a ritual carried across continents. In a diasporic context, the stiyka is more than a religious observance; it is a quiet assertion of continuity, a way of preserving Ukrainian traditions while embedding them within the multicultural fabric of Australian life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Easter Sunday arrived and the mood shifted toward celebration, the guard concluded. The stillness gave way to joy. Yet the image of Plastuny standing watch\u2014steady, respectful, and united\u2014remains a lasting symbol of faith in action and the enduring strength of community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
