23 May 2025 marks Heroes’ Day in Ukraine—a solemn and proud occasion when we honour all those who have fought, and continue to fight, for the freedom and independence of our country. It is a day filled with both gratitude and reflection.
At the May 17th skhodyny of Plast Queensland, the theme was “Who is a Hero?”—a powerful and timely topic that guided the activities and discussions throughout the afternoon.
The day began with a special moment: we officially welcomed Danylo as a new member of Plast. Vitaiemo u Plasti! Welcome to the family!
During the hutirka, we explored two important commemorations in the month of May:
- Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation (8 May)
- Heroes’ Day (23 May), historically known as Sviato Heroyiv
Plastuny were encouraged to reflect deeply as three central questions were posed:
- Who are Heroes?
- What makes someone a Hero?
- Why do we honour them?
To bring these concepts to life, participants watched videos that highlighted Ukrainian heroes across generations, and discussed how these commemorations compare with ANZAC Day services many have attended at school.
In a hands-on creative activity, our young Plastuny made red poppies, the universal symbol of remembrance. These were placed on hand-made wreaths, which will be proudly used at future Plast and Shkola ceremonies to honour the memory of those who gave—and continue to give—their lives for Ukraine.
Heroes were, are, and always will be.
Слава Україні — Героям слава!
