Yuriy Vasyl Nestor -“Pinocchio”- was born on 7 March 1936 in Boryslav.
He joined Plast in 1946 in the displaced-persons camps in Germany and continued his Plast involvement after emigrating to Australia in 1950.
As an active member of the Adelaide Stanytsia, Yuriy served in many leadership and organizational roles, vporyadnyk, hnizdovyi, stanychny, treasurer and chair of the Stanychna Rada. He was a member of “Braty Mowhli”.
Yuriy played a notable role in supporting the rebuilding of the Plast camp-museum “Sokil” in Ukraine. Through his commitment, fundraising and practical help, his contribution was formally recognized in both Ukraine and Australia. He participated in international scouting events, the 1959 Scout Jamboree in the Philippines and visited Ukraine many times (1991 to 2016) to raise funds for rebuilding Sokil .
Outside of Plast, Yuriy was active in Adelaide’s Ukrainian community. His roles included participation in the Adelaide Hromada, the “Hoverla” credit Union as well as church treasurer at his parish.
